Mayfield Memorial Hall News – November-December

Poppies on Poles…… they have been appearing on lamp posts and poles around Mayfield in early November in the period before Remembrance Day and the villages Remembrance Day service on Sunday the 13th of November. Sponsored by the Memorial Hall, they are the work of friend of the hall Simon Sowter and are a timely reminder of why the Memorial Hall was founded and is in existence and a reflection how we still remember those who gave it all for their country.

A special donation given and as it is the halls 100th anniversary since it opened in 1922 the hall committee agreed to give a £100 donation to the Poppy Appeal in recognition of the work they do in a time when money raised by the Poppy Appeal have been affected by COVID and the economic crisis.

And a special donation received……………It always gives us a sense of humility and true thanks when someone feels that they wish to donate to the Memorial Hall to help it keep going as the centre of social life in the village and we are honoured that Mayfield Bowls Club have given us a £100 donation which was the prize for winning a recent competition in Uttoxeter. The Bowls Club had the opportunity of donating their prize to whichever charitable cause they wanted to and Mayfield Memorial Hall was top of their list. Our sincere thanks to the bowls club – your donation helps keep us alive and open for all in our village.

This month Footballs coming home ……….or at least the England matches are. If you go down to the Memorial Hall this month you will see the World Cup, or at least a replica of the FIFA World Cup Trophy proudly in position on a table in front of the large screen ready to show all of the England games in the World Cup.

There is nothing like watching your national team play and on England’s past performance this should be a great experience and what better way than to enjoy it with friends and neighbours and a pint or two.

At the time of writing this article England are still in the competition and hopefully will go through to the knockout section and then on to the quarter finals, semifinals and who knows perhaps on Sunday the 17th of December we will all be at the Memorial Hall shouting England on in the final. What we can tell you is that every England match will be shown live at the Memorial Hall with the bar open. It’s a great place to come to enjoy the spirit of football and sing and shout along with fellow enthusiasts when we score and maybe share a groan when we hit the crossbar.

A crowd of supporters have already been at the Memorial Hall to help England along in their second game against the USA , and we are sure that Mayfield’s own support helped England win their first game and draw that second USA game.

OH and if you fancy being the England captain anytime that trophy is there for you to pick up and hold and just imagine that you indeed have brought football home to England and to Mayfield.

During England’s USA game we managed to get this picture of a potential England manager dreaming of what might be. Now who might that be? Answers on a postcard to…… Mayfield memorial Hall Committee
